Practicum
FAQs
Am I eligible to apply for practicum training here?
We offer clinical pre-internship placements to students from APA-accredited doctoral training programs in psychology. We do not require a Master’s degree but seek students at a level of clinical skill appropriate for practicum placement. As detailed in our application instructions, we require a letter from your Director of Clinical Training (DCT) attesting to your readiness for practicum placement and that you have met all internal approvals required at your home institution.
If you plan to submit an application, please check here to make sure our program has an affiliation agreement on file with your home institution. If you do not see your university listed, please email SemelCPTP@mednet.ucla.edu to connect us with your DCT so that we may initiate this process. This requires the involvement of our legal department and can take several weeks to a few months to complete.
Once I have accepted an offer, how long does the onboarding process take?
The onboarding process takes a minimum of 6 weeks but is highly dependent on how quickly you are able to complete the requirements. For a listing of requirements please view the ‘Onboarding and Other Information’ section at the bottom of the Application Portal web page
What are my options for parking?
Parking at UCLA can be challenging. We highly recommend using public transportation if that is available to you. Otherwise, here are some parking options that are more affordable than paying the daily parking rate:

https://transportation.ucla.edu/campus-parking/visitors
Some tracks offer limited parking vouchers. Please check with your track to confirm.
Is it possible to receive pay as a practicum student?
No. Practicum students are not eligible for compensation in their appointment.
What is the dress code for practicum training?
The dress code is business casual. However, there may be subtle variation in practicum track expectations depending on the nature of the clinical activities and clinical population. So, practicum trainees should confirm with their designated track director. It is expected that practicum trainees where their UCLA ID badge on the upper third of their body at all times.
How can I access mednet email via Microsoft Outlook on my smart phone?
Access to mednet email through Microsoft Outlook requires a formal request for Air Watch encryption to be added to your phone. Please email SemelCPTP@mednet.ucla.edu so that they can submit a request on your behalf.
What is the policy for use of written reports and audio video recording from my clinical care activities with UCLA patients?
For practicum trainees required to submit a written clinical report or audio/video recording stemming from their practicum activities to their home institution or interested in using a written report as a writing sample for internship applications, please read the Written Reports and Audio/Video Guidelines and associated attachments below:
What is the policy for reporting mistreatment?
Please view the policy for reporting mistreatment here.
Is there a policy for vacation days, sick days, and professional development days? What about formal leave (e.g., medical, maternity)?
We do not have a program-wide policy for time off due to vacation, short-term illness, or professional development days. Please request the policy from your specific practicum track director(s). Note that formal leave is a process that requires internal arrangements within your graduate program. If on formal leave from your graduate program, you would also arrange with your DCT and practicum track director/supervisor to arrange to take leave from practicum. And conversely, if you have not arranged formal leave with your graduate program then you should not be on formal leave from practicum.
Can I depart my practicum position early?
Early departure is discouraged. Practicum trainees are expected to adhere to the dates specified in their training acknowledgments barring a few exceptions. When early leave is permissible (e.g., maternity leave, medical leave), it is important to factor in time to wind down treatment with your cases and transfer them to another treatment provider.
While early departure for internship is permissible, we would not anticipate departure to exceed three weeks prior to your internship start date. Estimated practicum hours are reported and reflected in your APPIC application for internship.
